Greg Buttay
Greg Buttay was born in 1980 in France, in the former steel town of Longwy.
In the early years of his life, he witnessed the collapse and disappearance of the factories—industries that had once sustained many families through hard labor. Their vanishing left the town lifeless, leaving him with the impression of having been born into a world in global crisis.
He quickly sought refuge in history, art, novels, poetry, and his own imagination. It was only natural, then, that by the age of sixteen, he gravitated toward photography—a perfect fusion of art and technique.
From photography clubs to audiovisual courses and then to photography school, he eventually graduated in visual arts and photographic techniques at the Félicien Rops School in Namur, after passing a final jury examination. He went on to work in advertising, both for individuals and companies, and later in the field of architecture.
For a long time, he referred to himself as a “craftsman” of photography. But deep inside, he felt the burning fire that stirs the soul—the fire that defines an artist.
It was in Naples, during his travels, that his artistic spirit was fully reborn. Years of practicing, refining, and exploring photography allowed him to develop a unique visual approach—a deeply personal way of seeing the world and the people in it. His style is like a form of writing, a poetic transcription of reality.
